I am a geek...

Coolest Wedding Rings Ever! ...There you have it, the single most profound expression of your love and superiority over token ring in a $175 dollar package. Presumably, these Ethernet rings come in both straight-through and cross-over pin-outs for traditional and same-sex nerding. always thought our wedding bands were pretty geeky. They're made of layers of gold which was folded to produce the same pattern as the steel in samurai sword blades. Our rings were cut from the same block, so if you hold my band up to my wife's, the pattern is a perfect mirror image, and the rings themselves are as unique as a fingerprint

"Obama, Osma... are they brothers?"

Pastor places church sign that suggests Senator Obama is a Muslim (and/or a Terrorist). He didn't think people would be offended...From the IRS web site:In order to initiate a church tax inquiry, "The IRS can obtain the information supporting a reasonable belief from many sources, including but not limited to:* Newspaper or magazine articles or ads,* Television and radio reports,* Internet web pages,* Voters guides created and/or distributed by the church,* Documents on file with the IRS (e.g. a Form 990-T filed by the church), and* Records concerning the church in the possession of third parties or informants."http://www.irs.gov/charities/churches/article/0,,i ...Official IRS policy is that all churches are prohibited from "any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for political office." They are clear that leaders of churches can speak as individuals, but that making "partisan comments in official organization publications or at official church functions" is prohibited. Look at page 7 of the IRS Tax Guide for Churches and Religious Organizations: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1828.pdf

16 Lies Mothers Tell
Posted by Credit Card Expert 0 comments at 11:49 PM
We have all been victim to a few of Mom's lies. "Stop cracking your knuckles...it will give you arthritis!" was just one of the many things mothers tell their children to keep them in line. What lies did your mother tell you?If you were watching the television your Grandmom had as a child, then maybe it could happen. Very early television sets did emit a form of radiation, which causes all kinds of problems." ....Reminds me of a Simpsons episode: "There she is, the old Radiation King. You'd park yourself right there and watch for hours on end." [pan to Homer's shadow burned into the floor and wall]

Close Call: Apple OS X Almost Looked Exactly Like OS 8
Posted by Credit Card Expert 0 comments at 11:48 PM
Here's the biggest OS X mistake Apple never made: The original plan UI was to take the old crusty crap interface from OS 8* and drop it on top of the core. Thankfully Steve Jobs called the entire UI team a "bunch of idiots" and they used the beautiful tech demo mockups as the foundation for OS X as you see it today. Close call, huh? This wasn't a close call. The design problems at Apple during the years that Steve wasn't there, just goes to show you the boring nature of most programmers and coincidentally, most geeks. They just don't know how to make things look beautiful and more importantly, they don't want things beautiful. Geeks want features, even if it's badly implemented. That's why they can never understand or predict the popularity of anything Apple sells.View 6 replies to this comment (most popular has 16 diggs)-2 diggs by StanislawLem just nowI for one am not a geek. I care about usability over all else. While the old Apple UI looked a little drab, it was supremely functional and could be easily themed with the Kaleidoscope theming app. The OS X UI is missing a boatload of features present in classic. There was an old article on Arstechnica that I came across which summarizes this pretty well: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/finder.arsView 3 replies to this comment (most popular has 20 diggs)+4 diggs by Mardala just nowTry running OSx on a pentium II 233 with 128 mb ram with a GeForce I. Most GUIs were pretty dismal if you compare to what we have now. They did have designers back then too. View 2 replies to this comment (most popular has 7 diggs)+7 diggs by solid12345 just nowI had a conversation with a friend who is a web designer, myself being a graphic designer.I complained that clients want me to program them a website as well as design it. He complained they want him to design a website as well as program it. We both agreed clients are assholes who can't recognize sometimes it is better for 2 men to do the job instead of expecting us to be a jack of all trades, specialty people!View 2 replies to this comment (most popular has 3 diggs)+2 diggs by jabelar just nowYeah, it is pretty much impossible to "engineer cool". Coolness has to be inspired and driven by vision. A committee of engineers won't come up with the right thing. Usability can be improved a lot through thoughtful design process, but still not an engineer's forte. I'm an engineering design manager, so I know ...so that explains why linux is so uglyIt isn't so much about looking good as it is to being functional. True OSX has a LOT of eyecandy, but its simple things. For example if you put a computer to sleep in windows/linux, and you wake it up (by say opening the lid) it takes a little while and you can tell that it is opening up. A friend of mine didn't even realise that the apple went to sleep when he closed the lid. Actually he realised that it went to sleep but he just thought it was standard computer behaviour. I had to prove to him that my ubuntu could keep downloading something even with the lid closed (to show that a task kept on running). The closing and opening of the lid is so fast and smooth on a mac that a user cannot even tell when exactly it is waking up. I'm not saying this is a good/bad thing, it just is. All I am saying is that it is how everything fits together. BOTH my parrents have gone from regularly calling me up to fix their computer (windows usage) to never calling me about a computer problem (since they got a MacBook Pro). That says it better than anything else by far.Alright, I'm sort of confused I guess. All 5 of us Mac users that were interested in knowing about Apple's future projects know that there was a precursor to OS X based off of NeXT that was not OS X at all (and had a cooler name, Rhapsody). I assume that's what they're talking about here, because that WAS around the OS 8 days, whereas obviously OS X was developed in the OS 9 era. I think I still have several builds of it even. For developer purposes only. Of course.

Clinton on Olbermann Pledges to Nuke Iran if it Nukes Israel
Posted by Credit Card Expert 0 comments at 11:47 PM
This is not a joke. This is really scary news. On Keith Olbermann, Hillary Clinton explicitly and unequivocally pledged to use nuclear weapons against Iran is it used nukes against Israel: "Sen. Clinton confirmed Monday that as president she would be willing to use nuclear weapons against Iran if it were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel."Which is why it's so important for Iran to ditch the nuclear power plants, go to solar, wave generation, wind turbine and geothermal to meet its energy needs, and sidestep the whole Nuclear Bullet. (Not to mention putting a dent in their air pollution problem)Getting Iran (or anyone else) to abandon nuclear power calls for diplomatic talks, not sabre-rattling or threats. Hillary and Barack said that all options are on the table, and that would include diplomacy. Let's sit down and talk. How much would a summit cost? Not nearly as much as nuclear war, full stop.

Hardy Heron reflects Ubuntu Linux ambitions
Posted by Credit Card Expert 0 comments at 11:43 PM
Canonical plans to release Hardy Heron, its newest version of Ubuntu Linux on Thursday, and Chief Executive Mark Shuttleworth isn't being shy and retiring about it. "This is our most significant release ever," he said in an interview. Ordinarily I avoid publishing such marketing superlatives, but Shuttleworth is right. Hardy Heron, also called...I've been Windows free for about 4 years now. I honestly feel free on the Linux platform. I started with Fedora Core, but when Ubuntu came out I gave it a shot. Right now I'm on 8.04 and I really must say, watching Ubuntu grow up has been almost like watching a child grow into a respectable adult. 8.04 is a solid piece of software and I'd recommend it to anyone. Ubuntu has my full support even in their endeavors as a mobile software solution.
